The project

Where listening becomes feeling.

.astriDrift is the experimental music project of Robyn and Phil: two musicians with around twenty years each of making their own music, brought together by a shared curiosity about sound, silence and what happens when you stop asking music to behave.
We build songs from found sounds, voice loops, electronics, drones, granular textures, pedals and carefully chosen noise, layering them with poetry and melody. The music often takes its form from its subject: sound and silence, repetition and disruption, density and space become part of what each piece is trying to say.
Robyn brings the words and the architecture: free verse, unconventional structures, melodies and loops shaped around meaning. A poet and novelist as well as a musician, she is fascinated by tiny details, ambiguity, philosophical questions and the strange beauty of the ordinary world. Phil brings a deep curiosity about sound itself: twenty-five years of listening to experimental music, a willingness to make noise rather than follow technique, and an instinctive ability to discover what electronic kit, cabling and signal paths might be persuaded to do. His musical history includes drums with Eastern Seaboard and studying Indian classical music in India.
Neither of us is particularly interested in making music that settles comfortably into the expected shape. We listen and respond to each other’s cues, allowing each piece to remain a living, breathing organism. Melodies may shift. Sounds may arrive differently. Something might happen because of the space, the audience, or simply because that is what the music needs that time.
We want .astriDrift to be felt as much as heard: to reach beneath the surface, into the body and somewhere harder to name. Something immersive, atmospheric, raw, chaotic and ethereal. Something that might move you.
We are interested in the thresholds: the places between things, where sound becomes silence, chaos becomes form, and listening becomes feeling.
